Frederick J. Simrell was diagnosed in June 2007 with ALS, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis "Lou Gehrig's Disease," a fatal neuromuscular disease with no cure. Our family watched him suffer through the rapid progression of this devastating disease and Dad lost his battle two months later. It was very difficult accepting the fact that our dad had ALS because we knew that there was no cure. My younger sister Jennifer vowed that she would help raise awareness in honor and memory of our father. All donations for the Ironman Walkathon will go to the Robert Packard Center for ALS research at Johns Hopkins.
Frederick was born in Binghamton, NY in 1942. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. Fred was a Vietnam Veteran and served his community as a NY State Trooper for 21 years. He was a Chaplain for the American Legion and an active member of his church. Fred showed strength and dignity throughout his battle with ALS. His courage inspired us to help educate others in hopes that one day we can find a cure for ALS. Please help support us in honor of Fred by participating in the Ironman Walkathon. — T.
